- The Rich History of Chiropractic Care

A Journey Through Healing
Chiropractic care has a long and fascinating history, evolving from ancient healing practices to the modern, evidence-based healthcare profession it is today. At The Kingdom Chiropractic, we honor this rich heritage while embracing the latest advances in chiropractic science to provide our North Indy community with exceptional care.
The Birth of Modern Chiropractic
The foundation of modern chiropractic care was established in 1895 when Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first defined spinal adjustment. Working with a janitor named Harvey Lillard who had been deaf for 17 years, Dr. Palmer noticed a misaligned vertebra in his spine. After adjusting this vertebra, Lillard's hearing began to improve.
This remarkable outcome led Dr. Palmer to develop his theory of vertebral subluxation—the concept that misalignments in the spine can interfere with the nervous system and affect overall health. This groundbreaking insight became the cornerstone of chiropractic philosophy.
Chiropractic Through the Ages
Ancient healing practices in China, Egypt, and Greece incorporated manual manipulation of the spine and other joints to address various health concerns.
Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard, a janitor who had been deaf for 17 years. Following the adjustment, Lillard's hearing began to improve, leading Dr. Palmer to develop the theory of vertebral subluxation.
The Palmer School of Chiropractic (now Palmer College of Chiropractic) was established in Davenport, Iowa, marking the beginning of formal chiropractic education.
Chiropractors faced significant opposition from the medical establishment, with many practitioners even being jailed for practicing medicine without a license. Despite these challenges, chiropractic continued to grow in popularity.
The U.S. Council on Chiropractic Education was recognized by the Department of Education, establishing national standards for chiropractic education.
Today, chiropractic is recognized worldwide as a respected healthcare profession, with practitioners using advanced technology and evidence-based approaches to provide natural, non-invasive care for a wide range of conditions.
